Donut wars over Asia's sweet tooth.

Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corp. has reached an agreement with Star360 Group to develop 15 franchised stores in Singapore over the next 5 years. “We are pleased to finally introduce Krispy Kreme, the brand that has won fans the world over, to Singapore,” said Andy Chaw, CEO of Star360 Group. “We expect that Krispy Kreme has the potential to take the local doughnut scene by storm.” Krispy Kreme said that the company has nearly 500 stores in international markets and this and other development agreements adds another 400 international sites to the queue.

McDonald’s Setting Trends in India

US fast-food giant McDonald's, famed for its beef-based Big Mac burgers, said it’ll open its first vegetarian-only restaurant anywhere in the world in India next year.

US fast-food giant McDonald’s, famed for its beef-based Big Mac burgers, said it’ll open its first vegetarian-only restaurant anywhere in the world in India next year. The world’s second-biggest restaurant chain after Subway tailors its menus to suit local tastes, which in India means no beef to avoid offending Hindus and no pork to cater for Muslim requirements.

The first vegetarian outlet will open its doors mid-next year near the Golden Temple in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar in northern India where religious authorities forbid consumption of meat at the shrine. “It will be the first time we have opened a vegetarian restaurant,” a spokesman for McDonald’s in northern India, Rajesh Kumar Maini, told AFP.

Gap Inc. Eyes India Entry

Gap's interest in the Indian market comes as the Indian government late last year opened the way for so-called

U.S. apparel retailer Gap Inc. is conducting market research in India as part of a plan to open retail operations in the future, an official from the company’s local liaison office said Tuesday. The official noted that the plans are at a preliminary stage but that management in the company’s San Francisco headquarters is “deliberating on this.” He added that specifics on how many stores the apparel retailer plans to open and how much it may invest are likely to be decided early next year.
