Thailand's skyrocketing retail sector unlikely to slow.

One of the most promising sectors in Thailand’s property market is undeniably retail. At present there are a total of 6.21 million square meters of retail space across 323 developments in Bangkok. With an occupancy rate of up to 96.5%, the retail market offers good growth prospects over the next five years. According to the Thai Shopping Centers Association, up to 120 billion baht worth of additional investment will be pumped into the retail sector.

Xtep consolidates its Chinese outlets while it expands into lower-tiered cities.

Mainland sportswear retailer Xtep International plans to enhance its presence in third and fourth-tier cities this year to cash in on the potential increase in consumption demand driven by the country’s urbanization policy.

The management said it expected the sportswear market in the country to remain challenging this year. Intense competition, excessive inventory and high retail discounts would persist in the industry, it said.

Tech Savvy Retail

Retailers must embrace technology to provide a richer experience for customers.

Today’s customers are getting increasingly connected and tech savvy. A Motorola study showed that around 64% of shoppers aged 13 to 34 and 52% of shoppers aged 35 to 49 worldwide use their personal mobile device for shopping related activities.

In addition, he said a Cisco Digital Networking survey projects that broadband consumption will increase 13 times in the next 4 years, from 2013 to 2017. Forty seven percent of that mobile data traffic will come from Asia-Pacific.

Buy Local Luxury, Please

China's Xinhua news urging citizens to shop at home.

China’s consumers have taken a lot of criticism from the official Xinhua news agency saying that luxury consumers are hurting the local economy by not shopping at home. Chinese tourists have been avoiding steep luxury tariffs by flocking to Europe, The United States, and Asia in search of bargain prices.

To put things in perspective, Chinese people bought 25% of the world’s luxury goods in 2012. They spent a total of 306 billion Yuan ($49 billion), CCTV said, adding that of that money, 60% was spent abroad.

Dunkin' Donuts announces expansion plans in Vietnam.

Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc. has signed a deal to take its donut chain to Vietnam as the company continues its push to expand internationally.

The Canton, Mass., company has signed a franchise agreement with Vietnam Food and Beverage Co. to develop Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants across the country over the next several years, with the first locations planned for the Ho Chi Minh City area.
